Old Cut Diamond
by
DIAMONDS REALLY ARE FOREVER.
As the hardest natural substance on Earth they are very durable which makes them ideal for jewellery.
So when, for example, a diamond ring passes down through the generations there is a good chance that the diamond will be in as good a condition as when it was first cut and polished.
That being said, what you may notice is the difference in the shape and the cut of the stone.
THIS RING WAS A PERFECT EXAMPLE.
The modern 'Brilliant Cut' has 58 facets and is perfectly round but this was only developed in the early 1900's.
This stone is an 'Old Cut' and is not perfectly round by any means. We saw this as an opportunity to show off this now unusual stone when it came to setting it in a ring.
A tube setting is often preferred as it can enhance the size of a stone and can look neat and modern, as well as being very safe. Claw settings tend to be thought of as old fashioned.
However a tube setting in this instance would have only shown off the fact that
the stone is NOT perfectly round.
Our solution - this gorgeous meshing of the traditional claw setting - claws at north, south, east and west and a double claw on just the sides, so as not to overpower the stone.
A totally handmade setting using platinum wire.
